Panopto is a presentation capture application that lets you record, capture PowerPoint presentations; audio and video lectures and share these recordings in a Blackboard course.

Note: if you are having students to create presentations using Panopto make sure that you set up an "Assignment Folder" (see Student Presentations tab below)


Panopto must be initially configured within Blackboard linking it to a Blackboard course. Select Course Tools, Panopto Content, Configure, and Add Course to Panopto Content. Click OK on the Provisioning Results Screen and click Submit.

How do I?

Download Recorder/Install on PC

  • The Panopto Recorder can be downloaded from within Blackboard or by using the following link Download for Panopto Recorder for PC. Note this is an executable file so on the dialog box select the Save File option)
  • When the file downloads to the browser's download folder, double-click the to begin installation
  • Continue through the by clicking Next. When installation is complete, click Close then open the recorder

Sign In and configure recorder:

  • Server Address: Make sure that is displayed in the text box "Server Address" if not, type exactly as shown
  • Check the box "Remember me" to have Panopto remember your login (required for offline recording)
  • Choose how to sign in: Select (click) "Sign in with Blackboard" icon. At the Blackboard login, type in your Blackboard username; tab and type in your Blackboard password

On the "Create New Recording" tab select the following configuration

  • Session Settings: Ensure the correct folder you want the recording located displays in Folder option (no-click down arrow to change)
  • Name: Make sure to change the "generic" recording name to one that is identifiable! (e.g., Lecture on BioCube Technology 1776_201720)
  • Primary Sources: Select correct Video / Audio inputs
  • Secondary Sources:  Check capture PowerPoint, capture Main Screen
  • When ready, click the Record button near the top-left of the screen or, if using PowerPoint, select to open and begin recording
  • Once you've completed your recording, click the Stop button
  • The Recording Complete screen will open. Verify name and folder location, click Upload
  • On the Manage Recording screen
  • Once the recording has finished uploading, select the Share button
  • Use the drop-down listed under Who Has Access to select "Anyone with the Link"
  • Select Save Changes
  • Highlight (copy) the link information in the text box, you can then paste this link information in Blackboard or email



Bring up your presentation, select Slide Show View and when your are ready to begin recording  Use the following Hot Keys to:

  • Start the recorder: F8 key
  • End the recorder:  F10 key
  • Pause/Resume the recorder: F9 key


 Download/Install on MAC

  • Download and install the Panopto Recorder for Mac from  Download for Panopto Recorder for MAC (zip file)
  • When the file downloads, click the downloaded zip file to begin the installation

Once installed, click the Panopto Recorder icon to open and select Sign In. On the recorder options dialog box, select the following options:

  • Server Information:
  • Providers: Blackboard (note: if Provider shows Panopto, click the down arrows and select)
  • Type in your Blackboard username; tab and type in your Blackboard password and check option "Save Login"
  • Click Log In

Select "Create New Recording" and select the following configuration

  • Verify correct folder displays in Folder option
  • Change the "generic" recording name to one that identifies both recording and who recorded in the Session option
  • Select correct Video / Audio inputs
  • Verify that Record PowerPoint is selected under Slides
  • Open the PowerPoint presentation in Slide Show view
  • Click Start Recording

You can use the MAC Hot Key combinations to:

  • Start and End the recorder:  CMD+Option+R
  • Pause and Resume the recorder: CMD+Option+P

Sharing Panopto recordings

If students are having issues accessing your Panopto recordings, please check that your recordings are set to "Shared" by:

  1. Logging into the Panopto Recorder.
  2. On the Manage Recording screen
  3. Select the Share button
  4. Use the drop-down listed under Who Has Access to select "Anyone with the Link"
  5. Select Save Changes
  6. Highlight (copy) the link information in the text box, you can then paste this link information in Blackboard or email

Disable automatically generated emails

You can disable the emails generated when Panopto videos are made. Please note that the setting is an "all or nothing" option however.

To disable Panopto email notifications:

  1. Access
  2. Log in BB9 Production System then log in with your Campus credentials
  3. On the Panopto screen, click the bb9\username (top right corner), select User Settings
  4. Uncheck the option "Send me notifications"

Creating a Panopto's "Assignment Folder" allows students to record and upload course presentations (student instructions available here.


Create a Panopto "Assignment" folder for student recordings

As an instructor, you must first set up and configure your Blackboard course for Panopto. Directions on how to configure a Blackboard course for Panopto Lecture can be found here.

Once the course is “provisioned” for Panopto, you then create an "Assignment Folder” for student's to record and upload their lectures/presentations.

To create an Assignment Folder:

    1. Select Course Tools menu tab
    2. Select Panopto Content 
    3. On the Panopto screen select Folder Settings (appears as a "cog" icon near top right) 
    4. Click to select "Create Assignment Folder" 
    5. Click Close (X) 

Make Panopto Recorder available to students

You also need to make the Panopto recorder download links available. There is no direct link for students in Blackboard, so you need to provide the download/installation information.

Below is sample text that can be used:

You (student) will need to download and install the appropriate Panopto recorder on your computer (either PC or MAC).

  1. From a web browser go to
  2. On the User Login pane, click the down arrow to select Blackboard, click Login.
  3. Type in your Campus username and password, click Login.
  4. On the Panopto session screen, click the "Record" icon (located at top right) then select the download icon for either PC or MAC.
